Yr. 3/4 Tag Rugby - Thursday 22nd March 2018

We had been training hard for the Swindon Schools Competition – learning how to pass and receive the rugby ball, getting used to passing the ball backwards and running forwards! Learning new rules and how to tackle using a tag belt. Finally, the day had arrived and we were all very excited - all the players did extremely well and played some fantastic rugby. They improved each time they played and scored some great tries. They managed to win two of their five games and came close to winning a couple of other matches. They behaved impeccably and represented the school brilliantly. We are very proud of you all!

Sport Relief Week – 19th-23rd March 2018

We had fun taking part in lots of different sporting activities - running, skipping, obstacle course, relays, basketball and wake and shake. We also helped to run the relay baton between Chiseldon Primary School, the Infants to the Juniors and finally on to The Ridgeway! On Friday, we all dressed in our favourite sports clothes to help raise money for Sport Relief.

KS2 Netball – Wednesday 14th March 2018

This was the first time that this competition had been held and we took a girls’ team of Yr. 4/5/6 children over to Lydiard Park Academy to compete. Once again it was a freezing cold day with a biting wind blowing around us! The girls had not played netball before so this was a huge learning curve for them. First of all, we had to get used to the rotation system – take our bibs off, place them in front of us and move down one space was our mantra for the day!! We would change position and responsibilities frequently throughout the competition, learning new roles as we went into each new game. The girls had a great time and really developed their netball skills as the competition progressed. A huge well done to you all!

Yr. 5/6 TagRugby – Thursday 8th March 2018

Our Yr. 5/6 Tag Rugby club children enjoyed the Swindon Games competition this morning. It was a cold and windy morning over at Lydiard Park Academy, but we were well prepared having endured the ‘beast from the east’ the previous week! We started a little nervously in our first game, but grew in confidence with each match after this. Excellent defending saw some great ‘tags’ in each game. With some fantastic teamwork in our second and third matches we were able to get on the score sheet and played some superb rugby. Excellent sportsmanship was shown throughout the competition – well done to you all!

Change 4 Life Training – Wednesday 7th March 2018

Four of our Year 5 children enjoyed a great morning of Change 4 Life training with some Teaching Assistants from the Infant and Junior schools. They will now become our Change 4 Life Ambassadors as we look to bring new and fresh ideas to break times to keep all of our children active during the school day. Looking to hit the Governments daily recommended activity time of 60 minutes - 30 minutes in school and 30 minutes at home.

Yr. 5/6 Hockey – Wednesday 10th January 2018

Miss Hitchcox has been running an after-school Hockey Club and for the first time we have entered in to the Swindon Schools top competition for hockey – this required us to have a goal keeper all kitted up!! It was a cold and windy day and our hockey players were really excited and ready to play. We faced some tough competition on the day and our matches were very competitive! In true WPF spirit we showed great grit and determination to do our very best. Well done to all our hockey players!

Yr. 5/6 Boccia – Wednesday 13th December 2017

The annual Boccia competition came around very quickly this year. We always love this competition and our training had gone very well – despite Mr Ruck and Mr Wood’s weekly interruptions!! The teams were ready and raring to go. We took 3 teams and each played in their own group during the round-robin phase of the competition. With 23 teams entered in total it was going to be a busy morning. The games got under way and we watched and supported one another with great pride. Our sportsmanship and support for other competitors was great to see! Everyone did their very best and all teams played their games fantastically well, however our ‘A’ won their group andprogressed to the semi-final stages – we wereall very excited and a little nervous! The game un-folded and we held our nerve to win 3-0. We had made it through to the final – this was an amazing achievement for the team and we were all very proud. The final match took place and on this occasion we faced a really strong team that deserved their victory. Well done to all Boccia players – you made us all very proud!

Year 1 and 2 House Sports – Term 1

We have held the first round of house sports for Year 1 and 2. In our house teams Avebury, Salisbury, Savernake and Stonehenge we have competed in team relay races – running, skipping, hopping, side stepping, galloping, bean bag and quoit races. All the children listened, participated and competed with each other brilliantly – cheering everyone on!

Each class results have been added together and will form a running total throughout the year. The results for Term 1 were as follows:

Year 1:

1st – Savernake – 300 points

2nd – Salisbury – 230 points

3rd – Avebury – 200 points

4th – Stonehenge – 180 points

Year 2:

School Games – Wednesday 5th July 2017

What a way to end our sporting year! We took a Yr. 4 squash team and our reigning Swindon School Swimming champions over to Marlborough College to compete in the Swindon and Wiltshire School Games Competiton 2017. The squash players were the youngest children competitng and did themselves and WPF proud – they kept going and played some lovely squash, thoroughly enjoying the atmosphere of the competition.

Our swimming team were amazing – race after race they swam beautifully, showing grit and determination and cheering each other, and the other competitiors on! It was a nail biting affair and as the half way points were called out – we were in first place. This caused great excitement and some nerves!! With only one race remaining WPF were still at the top – the canon race was such a fantastic ending to a great competition. We were all hugely proud to become Swindon and Wiltshire Swimming Champions for 2017.

Yr. 4 Tennis – Thursday 22nd June 2017

For the first time, we entered the Swindon Games tennis competition and were all very excited to spend the morning at the David Lloyd sports centre. We took two teams to this competition and rather than play as individuals the format was a team competition. Each team consisted of 4 players (2 girls and 2 boys). Each player would be ranked and in turn play the same ranked player from each of the other schools. Matches lasted 3 minutes and the total number of points each player gained were added together to make a team total. The winners of each group and 2 lucky losers would qualify to the quarter final stage. The matches got under way and after a few nerves were brushed under the carpet everyone started to play some really nice tennis. We all watched each other’s matches and encouraged our team mates and when the last ball was hit we were called over to listen to the results. We were delighted to hear Wroughton ‘A’ team had qualified to the next stage of the competition. We excitedly took our places and after some fantastic tennis and high scoring games we heard that we had won and would play in the semi-final! The semi-final was nail biting and a very close competition with two of the games finishing with a tie. On this occasion, we could not match our opponents and in the end finished a very respectable 4th position out of 24 teams. A huge well done to all players – you showed excellent sportsmanship and we are very proud of you!

Yr. 5/6 Orienteering – Thursday 15th June 2017

Yr. 5 and 6 enjoyed a fab afternoon at Lydiard Park. We had a quick lesson on map reading and successfully completed a warm up orienteering course. Then it was on to the real thing and we were sent into the woods to find the correct stamps, in the quickest time and all following different maps. We all ran as fast as we could and completed the course in under 25 minutes! We particularly enjoyed being the first team to wear our new competition tops. Thank you to the Friends for these – we loved them and were all very proud to wear them!

Yr. 1/2 Quadkids – Tuesday 13th June 2017

A few lucky Yr. 1 and 2 children got the chance to run, jump and throw their way around the County Athletics Ground. We competed as a team in four different events – a sprint, 400m, long jump and a vortex throw. All our scores were converted into points and in our first entry in this competition we finished in 11th place. Well done to all our athletes!

Swimming Gala – 25th May 2017

The annual swimming gala came around very quickly this year and as ever our swimmers couldn’t wait to get in the pool! We were swimming at a new venue this time in Highworth and after a quick warm up the individual races began. Race after race went by and with it being two heats it was really difficult to tell how we were doing. Everyone swam to the very best of their ability and once the relays began we could see that we had a strong team. It was nail biting listening to the final results but very exciting to hear our name read out last – we had won and came back to school with 16 medals in total. A huge well done to the entire Swimming squad – we now look forward to the Wiltshire Finals at Marlborough College.

Jungle Agility – 3rd May 2017

We took a group of Yr. 1 children over to Lydiard Park Academy to participate in the launch of Jungle Agility. This was a really fun session based on lots of different movement skills and the children all took part brilliantly. They had to move around various stations and got to try out some throwing and catching, bowling and balancing cones on each other! A great morning had by all.

House Matches - 2016-17

This year we have organised House Matches for each year group and every child has participated in these. During the autumn term we held Line Ball/Basketball competitions and during the spring term we competed in Tag Rugby. The children have thoroughly enjoyed these competitions and have organised themselves into the appropriate ‘A’ or ‘B’ tournament. Each house team, in each tournament will have been awarded points for the place they finished and this has been added together to create a running total throughout the year. The swimming gala and sports day will be the final culmination of our House Competition this year.

Gymnastics Competition – 28th March 2017

Well done to our Yr. 2 and Yr. 3 gymnasts who took part in our first entry in this competition. It was a slightly daunting task to perform in front of a panel of judges and we all felt pretty nervous. We watched and waited patiently for our turn to compete and when it came we all performed to our very best. Well done to you all!

Yr. 3/4 Tag Rugby – 17th March 2017

What a fantastic competition this was – we took two teams of Yr. 4 children who competed brilliantly in their respective matches. Our ‘B’ team played 3 games and grew in confidence with every match, running with the ball well and improving with their passing and receiving skills. Our ‘A’ team played some outstanding tag rugby throughout the competition. Superb balance and agility was shown on numerous occasions as we ducked and dived for the try line! With two wins out of 3 games in our group stage we qualified for the semi-final. This was a nail biting affair as we conceded 4 early tries. However, we fought back with some fantastic teamwork and ended the game with a draw. We now had to focus with a sudden death play-off! Losing the toss for the re-start was going to make this a tough call. The team pulled together as best as they could with the opposition pinned on our try line, twice we fought them off, but could not hold out a third time. It was a valiant effort and the team were bitterly disappointed not to go through. A massive well done to you all!

Yr. 5/6 Tag Rugby – 8th March 2017

Well done to our Yr. 6 tag rugby competitors. We enjoyed four highly competitive games in this competition and showed fantastic grit and determination to do our best. We worked together as a team and showed great sportsmanship throughout the morning. A great team effort – well done to all!

Boccia Competition – 14th December 2016

We took 4 teams of Yr. 5’s over to Lydiard Park Academy to participate in the Boccia Competition. This is a sport similar to Bowls, however it is played sitting down! All our competitors excelled themselves; they thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere (once the nerves wore off) and showed excellent sportsmanship. Well done to our ‘B’ team who made it through to the semi-finals!

Cross Country – 19th October 2016

Well done to our Yr. 4 and 5 cross country runners. We have just competed in our first competition and came home with a medal. Teams were split into girls and boys with three children taking part in each team. Our Yr. 5 girls finished in 5th 13th and 18th position in their race and came 3rd overall, whilst our Yr. 4 boys finished 2nd 11th and 17th in their race and came in 2nd position overall. All children ran brilliantly and have thoroughly enjoyed themselves – well done to you all!
